Under Windows NT/2000 the IP address and the password are not consigned correctly. This is fixed with Service Pack 1 of VCI V2.12
  • Q: What do I have to be aware of when working with CAN@net II using a firewall?

For a correct functionality of CAN@net II the firewall has to be disabled or the packet filter has to be configured as following described:

    CAN@net II/VCI
The CAN@netII/VCI uses the ports 15000/tcp and 15001/tcp.
The PC must have access from all ports 1024-65535/tcp to the ports 15000/tcp and 15001/tcp of CAN@netII/VCI.
The CAN@netII/VCI must have access form port 15000/tcp and 15001/tcp to all ports 1024-65535/tcp of the PC.

    CAN@net II/Generic
The CAN@netII/Generic uses the port 19227/tcp.
The PC must have access from all ports 1024-65535/tcp to the ports 19227/tcp of CAN@netII.
The CAN@netII/Generic must have access form port 19227/tcp to all ports 1024-65535/tcp of the PC.

The CAN@net/Generic must have access form port 19227/tcp to all ports 1024-65535/tcp of the PC.

  • Q: Which network settings have to be set for CAN@net/VCI?
    IP
If the IP addressing is used, we recommend to configure the DHCP-Server that CAN@net always is assigned to the same address. Without the gateway the IP address should be in the same network area.

    Sub net mask
The sub net mask of CAN@net and PC should be accorded
    A-Netz 255.0.0.0
    B-Netz 255.255.0.0
    C-Netz 255.255.255.0

Using the CAN@net via a Gateway the Gateway-Computer address must be in the same sub net.

The IP address of a Windows 2000/XP PC can be determined by calling ipconfig.exe:
Start | Programs | Accessories | Command Prompt | ipconfig

The IP address of a Windows 98/ME PC can be determined >by calling winipcfg.exe:
Start | Programs | Accessories | Command Prompt | winipcfg
  • Q: Which ports are used for communication between CAN@net II and the PC?
    CAN@netII/VCI
    Configuration connection:
    CAN@netII/VCI: 15000/udp
    PC: 15001/udp

    VCI connection:
    CAN@netII/VCI: 15000/tcp, 15001/tcp
    PC: 1024-65535/tcp

    CAN@netII/Generic
    Configuration connection:
    CAN@netII/Generic: 15000/udp
    PC: 15001/udp

    Gateway mode:
    CAN@netII/Generic (Server): 19227/tcp
    PC (Client): 1024-65535/tcp

    Bridge mode:
    CAN@netII/Generic (Server): 19227/tcp
    CAN@netII/Generic (Client): 1024-65535/tcp
  • Q: How can I deactivate the VCI2 message box "IXXAT Driver Message Device is not responding"?
    "IXXAT Driver Message
Device is not responding, device maybe disconnected?
Please make sure the device is responding and
    start your application again!"

    Please set the registry entry
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | SOFTWARE | IXXAT | HW | xxxx | DISABLE_HEARTBEAT_TIMEOUT_DIALOG to 1.

(The "xxxx" in the registry path is for the number,
that was assigned to the CAN interface (CAN@netII/VCI or CANblue/VCI) during the installation.)

It is possible to check the Ethernet connection state by calling the function VCI_ReadCanInfo cyclically (each 0,5sec.). If the Ethernet connection is broken, the VCI_ReadCanInfo returns the Error Code 0, and the exception handler reports an error message.
  • Q: I am not able to access the CAN@net II. Why?

    1. Please check if you are using a correct type of the CAN@net II device.

    a) The CPU-LED of a CAN@netII/Generic flashes with 1 Hz green after power on.
The CPU-LED of a CAN@netII/VCI flashes with 2 Hz green after power on.

    b) The CAN@netII/VCI does not have a Web-interface like a CAN@netII/Generic.
The CAN@netII/Generic does not run as a VCI device with the Minimon.

    2. Please check if the CAN@net II is configured correctly.

Please clarify with your network administrator, which IP-address can be assigned to the CAN@net II.

Please note, if the CAN@netII is connected to the PC directly (without company network), you have to set a static IP address for the PC as well.

The CAN@net II and the PC have to be configured for the same network segment.

We recommend using a static IP-address for the CAN@net II.
(Using a DHCP server, the DHCP has to be configured with a reservation of the static used IP-Address for the CAN@net II)

    e.g.: Start | Control panel | Network Connections | LAN-Connection | Properties | Internet protocol (TCP/IP) | Properties | Use the following IP-Address

192.168.010.102 - IP address for PC
    255.255.255.000 - Subnet mask,
    when
    192.168.010.101 - IP address for CAN@net II
    255.255.255.000 - Subnet mask
    0.0.0.0 - Gateway IP address

    3. Please check the Ethernet communication between the PC and CAN@net II using "ping" in the cmd.exe.

    e.g.: Start | Run | ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
(xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - is for the IP-address of the CAN@net II)

If the CAN@net II does not answer to "ping", the PC and the CAN@net II are not configured correctly.
  • Q: Which Ethernet cable should be used for the direct connection between a CAN@netII and a PC?
The CAN@net II can be connected directly with a PC by using a crossed Ethernet cable or a straight Ethernet cable.
  • Q: Where can I find the demo application for the CAN@net II/Generic?
The CAN@net II/Generic includes a standard web server (HTTP Server) which can be accessed using any standard web browser with enabled javascript.

The source code for the demo application can be downloaded from the CAN@net II/Generic device using its web interface. See the "[CAN@net II/Generic demo client application]" link on the CAN@net II/Generic web interface.

In order to connect to the CAN@net II/Generic web interface, enter the actual IP address of the CAN@net II/Generic into the URL field of the web browser (http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx).
  • Q: Is it possible to use the CAN@net/Generic with the CAN@net II/Generic in bridge mode?
No. For the bridge mode we recommend to use devices of the same type, because of the different interpretation of the ASCII protocol for the RTR frames on the CAN@net/Generic and the CAN@net II/Generic and because of the different performances.
  • Q: Why does the CAN@net II Configurator not show the CAN@net II?
Please deactivate the Firewall or allow the CAN@netII Configurator in the Firewall configuration.
e.g.: Start | Control panel | Windows Firewall | Allow a program through Windows Firewall
  • Q: How can I activate the output of the Syslog debug information?
    • Please enter the IP address of the Syslog server in the CAN@net II / Generic web-interface:
      "ip address of CAN@netII"/syslog.htm
      192.168.10.188/syslog.htm
The Syslog protocol uses the UDP port 514.
The Syslog protocol can be disabled by entering the IP address “0.0.0.0” in the web-interface.
